Retreat Privacy: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Retreat privacy means more than having a room to yourself. You may also want time alone, a choice about appearing in photographs, and space to listen without sharing personal details. Before booking a retreat in Las Terrenas, turn those preferences into clear questions for the host.

This is a planning guide, not a description of the policies or inclusions of every El Retiro program. Ask for the arrangements that apply to your dates and accommodation.

1. What does a private room include?

Ask whether the bedroom and bathroom are exclusively yours, and which areas are shared. A private bedroom does not automatically mean a private terrace, pool or dining space. If you are traveling with someone, confirm whether the quotation covers one person or two and what sleeping arrangement it describes.

Tell the host which detail matters most to you. “I would like a bathroom I do not share” is easier to answer than “I need complete privacy.” Keep the written room description with your booking details.

2. Who will share the property?

Ask how many participants are expected for your dates and whether anyone outside the retreat group uses the same facilities. A maximum group size and the number currently booked answer different questions. Neither tells you who might share a particular meal or activity.

If quiet surroundings are a priority, ask about the rooms and shared spaces available during free time. Avoid interpreting an empty property photograph as a promise that you will be alone there.

3. Can I choose how much to share?

Before joining group conversations, ask whether participants may listen without speaking and what expectations apply to personal sharing. You can decide in advance which subjects you are comfortable discussing.

You might say, “I would like to participate, but I prefer to keep some experiences private.” Ask how facilitators handle that preference. A clear answer helps you assess whether the format suits you without disclosing anything personal during the booking conversation.

4. How are photography and testimonials handled?

Ask whether the team plans to take photographs or video, how permission is requested, and whether you can participate without appearing in promotional material. Clarify whether photographs taken by other participants are covered by group expectations too.

Consent to be in a group photo and consent for that photo to appear publicly are separate questions worth discussing. If you prefer no identifiable images, say so before arrival and confirm the practical arrangement with the host.

5. Where does alone time fit in the schedule?

Request the current itinerary and identify the free periods. Ask which activities are optional and how to let the organizer know if you want to sit one out. Do not assume an unscheduled hour means that every facility will be available for individual use.

Think about the balance you actually enjoy: shared meals with quiet mornings, for example, or one activity followed by an unhurried afternoon. Our mindful travel guide for Las Terrenas can help you think about that pace.

6. Can I stay reachable without constant interruptions?

Ask about phone use during shared sessions and practical connectivity if you need to contact family or work. Decide when you would prefer to check messages, while allowing for your actual responsibilities. You do not have to promise to be unavailable to plan a quieter trip.

7. What should I confirm before paying?

Request the room description, dates, total price, inclusions and booking terms in writing. Add any privacy arrangement that is important to your decision. If an answer is unclear, ask a specific follow-up before making a payment.

For an October stay at El Retiro, message the team on WhatsApp with OCTOBER and your preferred dates. Ask for the current program, room options and availability. This article does not confirm a price or a place.

Once your arrangements are clear, use our retreat packing checklist to prepare the practical details.
